Unity Cup — The 2010 Unity Cup was a great success, building on our 4 year tradition of close football and netball games and high quality key note speakers for the President’s lunch and Women’s afternoon tea. This year saw Rumba win the A-Grade netball and Congupna take out the senior football for the first time. Simon Overland, Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police gave a fantastic address to the large audience at the President’s lunch where he spoke of the role of sport in driving social inclusion, congratulating both Club’s on establishing this great day and that Victoria Police were fully supportive of the day and privileged to be involved. Nicole Richardson, who is the high performance manager at Netball Victoria gave an inspiring talk to the Women’s afternoon tea where she highlighted the role of netball in Australian sport focusing on the development of young women with more than 100 000 players across Australia.

Dream Time at the 'G' — The AFL’s Indigenous Round is with us on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd May and Rumba is participating in a big way through many events. Rumba senior players Rex Taylor, Brayden Williams and Corey Wanganeen (emergency) have been named in the Indigenous U18-23 team to play in the curtain raiser before the main game between Essendon and Richmond on Saturday night. All players will participate in a development camp from Monday 17th may to give them full exposure to the elite level of aussie rules football. Rumba is also taking a significant number of juniors to the event with many participating in the AFL Auskick event at half time during the main game. Rumba will also ensure that approximately 100 members and supporters get to the game to cheer on Rumba junior Jarrod Atkinson who is playing for the bombers on the night.

Facility upgrades — We are excited to be able to communicate with everyone that we will be undertaking extensive ground upgrades at the end of the 2010 season. Rumba has been successful in sourcing funds to upgrade our irrigation system and provide new grass. We therefore expect to have a brilliant playing surface for 2011 and substantial savings through improved irrigation and improved grass species that will reduce our water consumption.

Rumbalara Ripples — Our employment initiative continues to deliver great success with 42 people being supported into ‘earning’ roles and 23 into ‘learning’ roles. A great new outcomes has been the placement of Kira Winmar on an administration traineeship with Transfield Services. This is a fantastic full time employment opportunity for Kira who has already been linked with an in-house mentor and will receive on the job training that will see her graduate with a Certificate III in business administration in twelve months time. Please be in touch with Rex, Corey or Dallas through the Club if you are looking for employment opportunities.
